The Cost of Living and the Raise in the Cost of Living Scams

The cost of living has been on the rise for a while now. And with that, so have the scams. More and more scams are popping up that target pensioners and other old people. These scams can be very convincing, and oftentimes, they’re successful. So, what can you do to protect yourself? Here are a few tips.

1. Be aware of the most common scams.

Some common scams include fake charities, dating websites, and online auctions. Be wary of anyone who asks for personal information or money upfront. If someone you don’t know asks for your bank account information, Social Security number, or credit card number, be very careful. It’s probably a scam.

2. Do your research.

Before you give any money to a charity, make sure you do your research first. Check out the charity Navigator website to see if the charity is legitimate. When you’re looking at online auction sites, check out the site’s feedback score to see what other users have said about it.

3. Don’t be afraid to say no.

If someone calls you out of the blue and asks for money, don’t be afraid to say no. It’s okay to be polite, but you don’t owe anyone anything. Hang up the phone or delete the email if you feel like something isn’t right.

4. Use your gut.

If something feels off, it probably is. Trust your gut instinct and err on the side of caution. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

One last point to mention which is very important, the likes of HMRC or government bodies in the UK will never ask for sensitive details over the phone if they ring you out of the blue, so if someone rings and pretends they are from the Tax office and ask you for your bank details to verify your identity immediately close the phone as it will be a scammer.

The cost of living is rising, and so is the number of scams targeting pensioners and other old people. Be aware of common scams, do your research, and trust your gut. If you follow these steps, you’ll be much less likely to fall victim to one of these scams.
